Oreo Truffle Balls

Oreo Truffle Balls

8 ounces cream cheese, softened
16 ounces oreos, broken into quarters
Enough best quality white chocolate chopped to measure about 2 cups

In a large mixing bowl, beat cream cheese for a couple minutes to smooth out. Add in just over 1/2 of the broken oreos and mix until thoroughly combined. Add in the rest of the oreos and mix just until combined - some bigger pieces are ok.

Cover bowl and chill for at least 2-3 hours. Scoop out dough with a heaping teaspoon and roll into 50-60 balls. Cover and place back in the refrigerator to firm up.

Slowly melt the white chocolate in a double boiler, stirring occasionally, until most of the chunks are smooth. Remove and stir to melt the rest of the chocolate. Dip each truffle ball and set aside on a silpat or parchment paper. If the chocolate mixture starts to firm up, place back over the double boiler to slowly remelt, or gently rewarm in the microwave. Store in the refrigerator after all are dipped.

Ray - So true. I do like the chocolate covered oreos, but these bring it over the edge!

  3. These look delish! Did the oreos make all that cream cheese mixture turn brown? I'm gonna give it a try! Thanks...

  9. I have made with the mint and the peanut butter oreos as well - great!

I only have a problem with making the covering look smooth!

    How do you dip?

  10. The sound and look so good. I'll have to make them sometime soon.

  11. I have had to give out this recipe every time I take them someplace. They are delicious and easy. A couple teen boys just called me for the recipe after having them. Thanks for the recipe! Donna

  13. I'm having trouble with the coating. When the truffles dry on the wax paper and I lift them off, the chocolate coating "rips off" on the bottom. How can I prevent this?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Anonymous - Are you letting them fully set up in the fridge after you dip them? I'm not sure what the problem is as I've never had that happen before! Maybe the help of a knife to lift them off?

  15. I had these at thanksgiving! Absolutley delicious! Rich and chocolaty...mmmmm yum.

  16. Jennifer - I am right there with you... I have not made them lately - I think we need to get going on another batch soon!

    ReplyDelete
  17. How do you dip them and get them so nice and even and fully coated?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Shannon - I just used my fingers and toothpicks!

  19. If you want to have smooth chocolate coating, try putting a little bit of parafin wax in the melted chocolate. Alternately, you can try a bit of butter. I like to dip while these type of things (cookies too) are over a cake cooling rack set on parchment paper in a jelly pan so that I can reuse the chocolate that drips off.

If you want to poke it with a bamboo skewer or toothpick and then dip, the hole is easy to cover, but your smooth coating might not be so smooth. Cover it up by "piping" the chocolate over the dipped piece. Don't know how to pipe icing? Put some melted whatever-you're-using into a zip close sandwich bag and squeeze out all the air. Seal the zip closure. Roll the top down over itself until you get to the bottom, then tip the bag so that the bulk of it is only in one corner. This is how you will pipe after you cut a teeny hole. You can always cut a bigger hole, but it's hard and messy to make it smaller.

Had these today at a Christmas party for work, and loved it. It was actually the first bite I took before my German lunch. I don't like Oreos in the least, but I think the cream cheese cuts the sweet so that I can tolerate it.

  20. Someone brought these to my work Christmas party, they are to die for. My husband is an Oreo nut so these will be a favorite of ours for season's to come. Way too easy. You can make them in stages if you're short on time.

  23. Always use parchment paper when making chocolates. Also invest in a pair of cheap white cotton gloves and a set of candy making tools. The gloves keep finger prints off of your beautiful chocolate and it keeps them from melting from the heat of your hands.

The tools are great for dipping items (pretzles, truffles, nuts) into melted chocolate. They are available at AC Moore and Michaels.

    Happy New Year,

    ReplyDelete
  26. Can you make these two days in advance?

    ReplyDelete
  27. I've kept them in the refrigerator, well covered, for probably 3-4 days and they were just as good!

    ReplyDelete
  28. do i use an electric beater to beat it? or beat by hand?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Anon - you can do either. It will be easier with a mixer though.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Erin - I've never had the chance to freeze them as they never last that long. I don't know if freezing the cream cheese would alter the texture, but it is certainly worth a try!

    ReplyDelete
  31. thank you! I will let you know if i try it!

  32. These look absolutely delicious!

  37. I made these at Christmas. I used nonpareils mix sprinkled on top to make them look a bit more festive. I made a batch and substituted mint extract for the vanilla. Then I sprinkled them with green nonpareils so I could tell the difference. They were delicious.

    ReplyDelete
  38. What vanilla are you talking about? I am going to try adding coconut- Almond Joy Truffle!!!

  42. I just tried this recipe last weekend at a baby shower. As a different spin on things, she added food coloring to the chocolate, so we had "pink oreo truffles". They were some of the best sweets I have EVER had!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I have made these before using strawberry cream cheese and they were a huge success!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Hi Joe - these sound excellent. at the risk of sounding dumb - how do you dip the balls in the melted chocolate without getting fingerprints in the chocolate or missing the spot where your fingers are holding the ball.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Anon - a dipping fork or toothpick work well!

    ReplyDelete
  46. My friend heard this recipe on a the radio. We made them for a Christmas party. Sooooo delicious. Everyone loved them. So I googled to find the recipe to send to people, and came across this.

We used chocolate chips, and melted them in the microwave instead of using a double-broiler. A little simplier.

    Sooooo good!

  47. These were offered at a Christmas cookie exchange and they were the absolute hit of the party.

  48. Hi - not sure if you're still checking comments here since this post was originally from 2005. Had these at work this week and they are addictive. They're on my list for the family brunch this Christmas. I knew I had seen your recipe somewhere so I Googled and found it. Can't wait to make these. BTW, I am a regular subscriber to your blog as well. Keep up the good work!

  50. I made them instead of brownies or cookies after a dinner for the homeless and they loved them.

  51. I made these after I had them at a friends house. Super easy recipe to remember. I made them using Double Stuffed Cool Mint Oreos. They were a hit with my family and the kids. I can't wait to try the peanut butter ones.

  52. A family friend made these for my baby shower. She made the regular and the mint kind and they were wonderful!! She used white chocolate with blue food coloring to make a light blue drizzle for the top. It looked and tasted great. My favorite candy of all time!

  53. All i can say is DELICIOUS!! A friend made these for new years eve a few days ago and i was very impressed at how good they were and they seem so easy to make!

  54. One of my art students brought these to thank me for painting some tins for her Christmas party prizes. She enrobed them in a high quality milk chocolate and they were heavenly!

  55. This is next up on my Culinary in the Desert baking/candy making extravaganza! Picking up cream cheese tomorrow. Can't wait!

  56. i had these once and they were super delish! great idea, keep it up =]

  57. I put some of the melted choColate in an ice cube tray, then added the Oreo mixture ball, then spooned chocolate over it filling in the sides and covering the ball. Then put it in freezer for about 20 minutes.

You have to flip the ice cube tray over and give it a few good slams against the counter...but they'll come out...nice, smooth and professional looking.

Then if you want to go the extra mile, you can decorate them.

    ReplyDelete
  58. do you take out the cream in the middle of the oreos or leave it there?

    ReplyDelete
  59. Anon - you use the whole cookie, creme and all.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Oh, I am SO happy to find this recipe! I bought a suspiciously similar confection at a candy store while traveling last year, and have been dying for more ever since. I can't wait to try them!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Joe, I finally made these. The problem was I coldn't stop eating them after I made them. They are extremely dangerous...;)

    Thanks for another winner.

  62. I just made a batch. I used two types of chocolate chips mixed with Crisco shortening which I melted in the microwave. I put the balls in the freezer for about an hour. The chocolate immediately started to harden on the cold balls. I also added chopped walnuts to some of them. Delicious, but now I have to get rid of them as I will eat them all and get sick.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I've bookmarked this recipe for a long time and finally made it yesterday. I just wanted to add that I found chopsticks to be better for handling them while dipping, rather than toothpicks or skewers. But I suppose that'd only be the case for people used to using chopsticks.

Anyway, thanks for a great recipe! I made it with some friends for Valentine's Day and they turned out great! :)

  64. Wow I am so excited you have this on your site. I was just sitting here thinking about the time I had these at a party but I could only remember the cream cheese and covered in chocolate. It was driving me nuts. My husband is coming home from being over seas so I am trying to create a nice desert for his homecoming and you have exactly what I need. I love these truffles, addicting is what they are.

  65. Has anyone tried to freeze these, does it affect the cream cheese in any way?

    ReplyDelete
  66. Anon - We have frozen them in the past and they have been fine!

    ReplyDelete
  67. What is a good way to freeze them, do you just put them in zip lock baggies?? I absolutely love these and they are so yummy but I wanna save some!
