The outcome...

*Just a reminder - we do pretty much post daily so if you don't see a new post at some point, you may need to hit refresh to see the changes!

In case you missed the posts - Here is what we started with, this is the transition and we are finally ready to post the outcome. This was our first time ever doing a remodel of this nature - so we have certainly learned what we would do and not do next time. We had some trouble between the natural light/kitchen lights and the dark counter tops, so please forgive the picture quality! As always, you can also click on the pictures to see the bigger versions!

Before...

After!

Now, we do have some things to finish up - there will be some pendant lights that will hang down above the bar area and we have to extend the tile floor out a little. We ended up painting the kitchen area a "lemon parfait" yellow with the remaining walls of the dining room/living room a "pine needle" green.

The cabinets are semi custom maple from Kraftmaid - Portsmith Roman Style with a honey spice glaze.

The granite is called Verde Peacock. It has a dark background with green and gold hues.

This is what happened where the wall was separating the rooms. We added a large island type piece.

Another view - this counter top part was cut from a single slab, 4 of the granite people had trouble lifting it! Everyone let out a big sigh of relief when this made it up all of the steps and safely inside!

Here is the bar area that comes out from the top of the island

Another direction from the island area

This is what you see when you come up the stairs or in from the front door.

The kitchen is much brighter without the walls and a lot less closed in now that it is open to everything. It was so worth the wait, but it took a long time and was an inconvenience. However, we would absolutely do it again - but would have a better plan/time line with the contractors. We even came in under budget! Happy dance!

Bring on the Christmas baking spree!

  6. WOW - I love it! When can I stop by and help you cooking?

Is it okay to confess that I am jealous now? All I have is a tiny kitchen but at least I get to play in a huge kitchen twice a week ;)

  8. This is beautiful! My parents just moved and will be updating the kitchen once the old house sells. Let me just say pink marble backsplash, green countertops, and mauve-fruit wallpaper. Hmmmm....They are trying to decide on countertops and aren't sure about black. How do you like it?

  10. Joe~

I have been in an unreasonable amount of suspense waiting to see your new kitchen, and you haven't disappointed. It's beautiful, functional, welcoming, and lets others be with you while you're cooking without getting in your way. I'll continue to look forward to your (again, unreasonably) prolific, scrumptious cooking. Well done!

  14. Joe - LOOOOVE the new kitchen! It's amazing what just opening it up and brightening the paint job can do, not to mention all the other wonderful changes! I wish we had your motivation and aggressiveness on something like this (and perhaps funds!?). Just outta curiousity, how big is the new house? We're still in the house hunting/selling stages, with an incredibly sluggish housing market here in NE Ohio, plus a couple very particular guys! ;-)

  17. Joe,
I think it was a great idea to remove the dividing wall and extend your kitchen to include a multi-tasking island. The colours are lovely, and it is fabulous that you can see the outdoors directly from the kitchen island. It is very lovely. You and Jeff must be really really pleased.

  19. That looks great.

I can't imagine what you'll cook now considering all the recipes you cranked out of the "living room" kitchen! I bet you were thrilled to have the kitchen back.

  23. Beautiful! The breakfast bar area is wonderful - it's so nice to have a place where people can comfortably hang out with you in the kitchen as well as being open to your other living areas. You don't feel as though you've been locked away from your guests when you're in the ktichen. :)

  25. Thanks everyone! If I missed any questions that we have not responded too please let me know. The house is about 2,000 or so square feet. We didn't have a huge budget, but we tried to keep it reasonable.

  26. Jill - It is smaller than it looks, but opening up the area sure helped!

    Just some girl - Thanks!
