Oreo Truffle Balls

Oreo Truffle Balls

8 ounces cream cheese, softened
16 ounces oreos, broken into quarters
Enough best quality white chocolate chopped to measure about 2 cups

In a large mixing bowl, beat cream cheese for a couple minutes to smooth out. Add in just over 1/2 of the broken oreos and mix until thoroughly combined. Add in the rest of the oreos and mix just until combined - some bigger pieces are ok.

Cover bowl and chill for at least 2-3 hours. Scoop out dough with a heaping teaspoon and roll into 50-60 balls. Cover and place back in the refrigerator to firm up.

Slowly melt the white chocolate in a double boiler, stirring occasionally, until most of the chunks are smooth. Remove and stir to melt the rest of the chocolate. Dip each truffle ball and set aside on a silpat or parchment paper. If the chocolate mixture starts to firm up, place back over the double boiler to slowly remelt, or gently rewarm in the microwave. Store in the refrigerator after all are dipped.

I'm having trouble with the coating. When the truffles dry on the wax paper and I lift them off, the chocolate coating "rips off" on the bottom. How can I prevent this?

Anonymous - Are you letting them fully set up in the fridge after you dip them? I'm not sure what the problem is as I've never had that happen before! Maybe the help of a knife to lift them off?

If you want to have smooth chocolate coating, try putting a little bit of parafin wax in the melted chocolate. Alternately, you can try a bit of butter. I like to dip while these type of things (cookies too) are over a cake cooling rack set on parchment paper in a jelly pan so that I can reuse the chocolate that drips off.

If you want to poke it with a bamboo skewer or toothpick and then dip, the hole is easy to cover, but your smooth coating might not be so smooth. Cover it up by "piping" the chocolate over the dipped piece. Don't know how to pipe icing? Put some melted whatever-you're-using into a zip close sandwich bag and squeeze out all the air. Seal the zip closure. Roll the top down over itself until you get to the bottom, then tip the bag so that the bulk of it is only in one corner. This is how you will pipe after you cut a teeny hole. You can always cut a bigger hole, but it's hard and messy to make it smaller.

Had these today at a Christmas party for work, and loved it. It was actually the first bite I took before my German lunch. I don't like Oreos in the least, but I think the cream cheese cuts the sweet so that I can tolerate it.

Someone brought these to my work Christmas party, they are to die for. My husband is an Oreo nut so these will be a favorite of ours for season's to come. Way too easy. You can make them in stages if you're short on time.

Always use parchment paper when making chocolates. Also invest in a pair of cheap white cotton gloves and a set of candy making tools. The gloves keep finger prints off of your beautiful chocolate and it keeps them from melting from the heat of your hands.

The tools are great for dipping items (pretzles, truffles, nuts) into melted chocolate. They are available at AC Moore and Michaels.

Anon - you can do either. It will be easier with a mixer though.

Erin - I've never had the chance to freeze them as they never last that long. I don't know if freezing the cream cheese would alter the texture, but it is certainly worth a try!

I made these at Christmas. I used nonpareils mix sprinkled on top to make them look a bit more festive. I made a batch and substituted mint extract for the vanilla. Then I sprinkled them with green nonpareils so I could tell the difference. They were delicious.

I just tried this recipe last weekend at a baby shower. As a different spin on things, she added food coloring to the chocolate, so we had "pink oreo truffles". They were some of the best sweets I have EVER had!

Hi Joe - these sound excellent. at the risk of sounding dumb - how do you dip the balls in the melted chocolate without getting fingerprints in the chocolate or missing the spot where your fingers are holding the ball.

My friend heard this recipe on a the radio. We made them for a Christmas party. Sooooo delicious. Everyone loved them. So I googled to find the recipe to send to people, and came across this.

We used chocolate chips, and melted them in the microwave instead of using a double-broiler. A little simplier.

Sooooo good!

I made these after I had them at a friends house. Super easy recipe to remember. I made them using Double Stuffed Cool Mint Oreos. They were a hit with my family and the kids. I can't wait to try the peanut butter ones.

A family friend made these for my baby shower. She made the regular and the mint kind and they were wonderful!! She used white chocolate with blue food coloring to make a light blue drizzle for the top. It looked and tasted great. My favorite candy of all time!

One of my art students brought these to thank me for painting some tins for her Christmas party prizes. She enrobed them in a high quality milk chocolate and they were heavenly!
